I hear people sometimes talk about how it's not enough to know ABOUT God, but that you KNOW God. I completely agree and I'm not at all criticizing that idea. I just wanted to ask how you distinguish one from the other? How can I know that I know God and not just about God?

To me it's like the difference between reading a biography and spending time talking to the subject of the biography. When you read a biography you learn about someone, when you speak directly to them get to know them.
Knowing about God is learning a bunch of impersonal facts about Him. Knowing God is about having a relationship with God. It's speaking to Him and knowing that He's there listening to you and listening to Him when He speaks to you.
In another context it could also be about salvation. Many people know about God, but don't know Him as their personal Savior.
